High in the mountains of the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala lies the community of Aldea El Batal. For decades, the remote location of this village cut them off from many crucial resources, including access to education. In 2019, Aldea El Batal became the first community in Guatemala to partner with the non-profit organization buildOn to construct a new school. With 100+ students now in attendance, this school is helping to improve literacy rates and ensure that girls and boys have equal opportunities to learn.
Our mission is to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations through service and education. We mobilize U.S. students to transform their communities through service and change the world by building schools in developing countries.
We empower villages in some of the world’s economically poorest countries to take the lead in bringing education to their communities. Every two days we’re constructing a new school in eight countries including Burkina Faso, Haiti, Mali, Malawi, Nepal, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Senegal. To date, we have built more than 2,000 schools.
